Can you run outside guidelines?
I am putting a Margay Panther x back together with a KT100. If I show up at VKA events and don’t meet the guidelines can I still run and just not be scored? I’m talking about running in the over 60 class with a four hole can and a two disc dry clutch just to get this thing on the track and have some fun. Is it OK to run outside the guidelines and ask to be placed at the back? Thanks.
Would love to see you join the group and have some fun…..but…The VKA has guidelines for a number of reasons…one of them being SAFETY…so first your helmet has to meet current safety regulations….period….
and again, the pipe guideline is to keep everyone in the same playing field…..
so for minimal cost you can meet guidelines,,,,,

Allot of time and effort by the VKA goes into the guidelines — they are assembled to create a fair and safe environment, all while trying to incorporate about 30+ years of equipment into the picture — it is not a perfect system, but it works well — allowing equipment that does not conform would go against the whole reason for having the guidelines in the first place
Thank you so much for sharing this Thread with us. Keep sharing more
Robert, the Guidelines are just that, and it is up to the individual event promoter to apply and enforce. You may well note that there are two schools of thought as regards vintage karting. Ostensibly we do not race. Our heats are “demonstrations”, though at Tier-1 VKA events they do keep score – which now and again results in overly-aggressive driving. While called a demonstration, that really is racing in disguise (which not everyone agrees with, BTW). VKA also puts on Tier-2 events that are not flagged. Similarly, all VKCA events are not flagged either. Now, even at a Tier-1 event, there is plentiful opportunity to get in “play” time on the track, even running at speed with others driving similar karts. My observation in general is that if you show up with even a fairly modern kart, as long as it is running a traditional engine, a 1-1/4 inch axle and no bodywork other than a fairing in front of the steering shaft, you should be able to run. If you do participate in flagged heats with the VKA, you may find that the type of engine and type of tires are likely to receive close scrutiny. I belong to both clubs and participate in VKA events, but generally do not run in the flagged heats. Good luck, and hope to see you at the track!!!
Mr. Waltz Thanks for your post! While I still like to race wheel to wheel as I used to do, I do not want to tear up /hurt equipment nor do I want anyone to get hurt! Which as you stated is what this is about! If that’s your thing, please go and race elsewhere.
Besides this is now like wrecking any Vintage or Antique Car. I saw a Dual Mc90? Kart that was listed at $~20,000. Anyone that owes even a lessor Kart would be and should be upset if it was wrecked. Most of us can barely own such equipment! While my karts are single engine and 1980 to ~1993 Karts with the possible exception of a Emmick or Coyote, I’d be upset if they were hurt. Though the value is not as much as some of the Karts. I wish I had one of those old and I think rare Fox rear engine over the axil karts with single Mc90’s or later Mc91’s. The earliest was ~1960 and it was sold first for a later version in which we owned two.
Dan, thanks for comment. You may find it interesting that this year will be my 26th consecutive year racing with the Blue Max Kart Club in Davis, CA. My personal belief is that if you need to race, you might need to just get a modern kart and join a local club and race. That’s what I do. Pic is me winning my 5th club championship in 2021 in my Emmick Avenger and Woltjer KT100 engine.
